Possibly the most popular of Superman's silver-age foes, Brainiac has been plaguing the Man of Steel for almost 50 years. A super-genius from the planet Colu, Brainiac's pre-Crisis modus operandi was wandering through the universe, armed with a shrinking ray, collecting cities to study in his laboratory. This brought him into conflict with Superman, when he decided to add Metropolis to his collection.
Post-Crisis, Brainiac started off with a very different origin, but has gradually regressed to his original history and motivations. He also has his funky death's-head space ship again. Which is nice. He's one of the few villains who has a decent shot at giving Superman a run for his money, having brains rather than physical strength on his side. Plus, he's got a way-cool descendant, who hangs round with the Legion of Superheroes, creating one of the few links between the 21st and 31st centuries.
